MAKE SURE YOU GET YOUR BADGE

AFTER THE annoucenemt in December last year that all ex Land Army and Timber veterans would get a badge to commemorate their efforts, local MP is calling on former members to apply for their badge.

Already 29,000 applications for the badge designed by the Garter King at Arms have been received. A national ceremony will be held at 10 Downing Street on the 23rd July when 50 former members of the WLA will be presented with their badges. Later regional ceremonies will be held all over the country to celebrate the award of the badge.

Commenting on the awarding of the badge, Angela Smith says,
“It was about time that the work of the Women’s Land Army was recognised. The service they gave their country was just as important as that of their men folk. Without their efforts the country would have suffered even more during those dark war years. It is right their efforts are recognised and remembered. So for anyone who has not already applied please do.”

To apply for your badge write to Mr Dermot Mclnerny, DEFRA 5E Millbank, C/O 17 Smith Square, London, SW1P 3JR, or call 08459 33 55 77. Application forms can also be found on the internet at www.defra.gov.uk/farm/working/wla.

Issued : 1 July 2008
