Dodworth ward lies around the western fringes of Barnsley town which has grown steadily in recent decades. The ward contains three distinct areas. In the south of the ward is the former pit village of Dodworth with 5,400 people. In the north is the suburbanised village of Higham. In the east, the ward includes half of the Barnsley suburbs of Pogmoor and all of the neighbouring Broadway area, reaching to within a mile of the town centre.

Dodworth village is varied and is more typical of Barnsley than the rest of the ward.

There are a number of council estates, notably at Gilroyd and at South Road. There are established private housing estates at Baslow Crescent and Strafford Walk.

Extensive new housing dominates the east side of Dodworth around Water Royd Drive. These new homes are popular for commuters working in Barnsley, Sheffield and many other centres. There is employment locally at Dodworth Business Park.

The inner part of the ward, around Pogmoor Road and Broadway is a suburban slice of Barnsley. The most affluent area of the ward is west Pogmoor with modern detached housing and many health professionals. 2.1% of Dodworth residents belong to ethnic minorities, a high proportion by Barnsley standards. The main concentration is in Pogmoor, often related to hospital employment. Broadway is a more mixed suburb with small council estates as well as private housing.

Proximity to the M1 Junction 37 means that Dodworth ward has a high proportion of commuters to Sheffield and Leeds. Many people also work in Barnsley town centre which is within 3 miles for all residents. Dodworth has the highest percentage of pensioners in Barnsley with 25% of the population aged over 60 in 2001.
