AT long last repairs to the A61 through Grenoside have finished and the road is now fully open to traffic in both directions.
Work
on the A6102 at Oughtibridge started last month with
completion due
in the Autumn. The cost of repairs to the
roads is substantial, in the region of £6 million. However, local
residents should be reassured that the full cost is being met by the
Government. The area is also seeing road calming and safety measures put
in place, including a new zebra crossing in Oughtibridge. There is no
doubt the unavoidable diversions have put a strain on many people’s
travel arrangements but the end is now in sight. Angela will monitor
progress and like everyone else affected by this closure, looks forward
to seeing work completed.
There is no doubt the closure of the A6102 at Middlewood has put a tremendous strain on many people’s lives over the last few months.
People’s frustration with the length of time it is taking to start repairs on the road is quite understandable. However, civil engineering experts say repairs to the road are complex if a long-term safe repair is to be made.
A complicating factor to any repair is that the main water main for North Sheffield runs under the road and has already had to be diverted above the damaged road. This water main has also got to be repaired before any new surface is laid.
As soon as Angela found out the extent of the damage to the road she lobbied Ministers, along with other Sheffield MPs, to make sure resources were forthcoming to repair the road. She also made sure that repairs to the A6102 and A61 were prioritised by the Council.
However, in the mean time it was important that diversions were put in place. This is now done with the A61 taking most of the diverted traffic. It was also important that the smaller roads around the closed road received upgrades to handle increased traffic flows, such as the re-surfing of Stockarth Lane and the road calming measures proposed in Worrall and Oughtibridge.
